Genesee Headwaters

Clean Air and Clean Water: Laura E. Arney traveled to Genesee Pa on Tues Mar 21 2006 to visit the Genesee Headwaters Association. She was in town to give a power point program which showed an overview of the geology and the current conditions of the Genesee River to the north. As a bonus the association president and wife toured Laura around, showing off successes and challenges in this part of the river.

The river begins in 3 Pennsylvania hillside streams. The PA association came together as a result of river flooding into back yards in the community. Fortunately for the environment, many members are also avid trout fishermen and wanted natural habitat intact. So, as usual, when the environment gets personal, people will get involved. The group has gotten grants for several stream bank repairs. They also got funding for and assessment of all 3 creeks. Students from a SUNY school walked each tributary with GPS and marked and rated problem areas. With this list of priorities, the group intends to work methodically on improvements.

The attached photo of Laura and Stephen Richard is at the next repair site along an abandon railroad tracks. It will be put to bid soon. The other photo shows a small creek with logs in a new style with upstream end lower than downstream end to shunt high water to over flow the bank instead of driving full force into topsoil.

Next they will be working with a farmer who has creek where cattle mingling stirring up mud. Gas pipeline goes thru the creek also. A plan is being developed to fence cattle out except in one crossing re-inforced with stone where cattle can drink. The gas company will also mitigate at the site.

Laura was also shown a dirt road re-surfacing job that was done with crushed limestone (not local resource). This treatment has reduced the pH for the stream and improved water habitat.

It is gratifying to be linking communities along the watershed of the Genesee River
